CJK support

GiftPrint automatically detects Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters in gift messages. When detected, cards always render with a specialized CJK font (built on Noto Sans SC) so glyphs display correctly — even when the toggle is off.

The CJK Language Support (Beta) toggle controls when the CJK font is loaded, not whether CJK characters render. Turning it on preloads the font when the order page opens; leaving it off makes the font download on demand the first time you generate a PDF that contains CJK characters. Functionally identical — only the latency on the first CJK PDF differs.

Enabling CJK support

1. Go to Settings → General → Print
2. Toggle CJK Language Support (Beta) on
3. The CJK font (Noto Sans SC, ~20MB for the Regular and Bold weights) is preloaded when an order page opens. GiftPrint serves the font files from its own servers — no third-party font CDN is involved
4. Subsequent CJK PDFs are cached by the browser and generate instantly

How it works

When you click Download PDF:

1. GiftPrint scans the gift message, recipient, and sender names for CJK characters
2. If any CJK character is found, the whole card switches to the CJK font — no matter what the toggle is set to
3. If CJK is detected and the toggle is off, a warning banner is shown reminding you to enable preloading for faster PDFs:

   "This message contains CJK characters (Chinese/Japanese/Korean). Enable CJK Support in Settings for correct rendering and faster PDF generation."

The CJK font ships Latin glyphs alongside Chinese ideographs, Hiragana, Katakana, and Hangul — so mixed-language text like "Happy Birthday 太郎さん!" renders correctly. Cyrillic and Greek glyphs are not part of the CJK font — those scripts are served by GiftPrint's base Noto Sans / Noto Serif families regardless of the toggle.

Every script below renders without any toggle. The toggle only affects when the CJK font is fetched.

• Greek — Modern Greek, Ancient Greek
• Vietnamese — Full tonal marks (á, à, ả, ã, ạ)
• Devanagari — Hindi, Sanskrit, Marathi

Served by the CJK font (auto-selected on detection)

• CJK Unified Ideographs — Chinese (Hanzi), Japanese (Kanji)
• Hiragana & Katakana — Japanese script characters
• Hangul — Korean letters
• CJK Extension B — Rare and historical ideographs

What if I forget to enable it?

If CJK characters appear in a gift note but the toggle is off:

• A warning banner appears on the order page (text quoted above)
• The PDF still generates and CJK characters still render correctly — the font is downloaded on demand
• The first CJK PDF after a fresh page load may take an extra second or two while the font loads

Enabling the toggle simply preloads the font earlier so the first CJK PDF is just as fast as the rest.

Performance

The CJK font weighs roughly 10MB per weight — about 20MB for the Regular and Bold files that are loaded together. With the toggle on, the font is requested as soon as the order page renders. With the toggle off, it is requested the moment you click Download PDF for the first time. Either way the font is cached by the browser afterward.

Emoji support

Emoji render correctly in all gift notes (e.g., 🎄, ❤️, 🎉). They are served as Twemoji PNG images and do not require CJK Support.
